My artistic practice examines the intersection of personal identity, social structures, and the ways societal expectations shape and constrain women’s roles. This ongoing exploration delves into themes of gender identity, motherhood, and the pressures women face. In my work ‘Forms’, I reflect on my personal challenges during motherhood, a time often shaped by societal stereotypes and rigid gender norms.
Through sculpture, I engage with and deconstruct these imposed norms. I begin by creating ‘ideal’ forms—perfect spheres—which I then subject to various forces, disrupting their perceived perfection. This process embraces the fluidity of form and celebrates imperfection, challenging the idealized images often imposed on women. The deformations symbolize rejecting socially constructed ideals of ‘perfection’ and ‘success’ that women, especially mothers, are expected to embody.
This work is a feminist exploration of resistance against patriarchal and capitalist systems that limit women’s autonomy and define their worth. I propose that deconstruction and failure can be acts of resistance, creating space for alternative forms of identity, expression, and empowerment. My work invites critical engagement with the gendered structures that govern our lives, fostering a dialogue that encourages personal and collective transformation.
By using materials and processes that embody both structure and fluidity, I aim to create works that not only invite aesthetic reflection but also encourage contemplation on the broader social frameworks shaping our lives. The focus is on the creation and destruction processes as a means of reclaiming agency and offering new narratives within contemporary feminist discourse.
